Shelters & Rescues
Shelter and rescue work are very near and dear to my heart as that is where my whole career began. I only wish that there were more opportunities for continuing education back then as there are today!

Shelter and rescue sessions can be set up a few different ways: evaluations for individual dogs, seminars for staff, or general staff sessions.
Evaluations for individual dogs are perfect for times when a dog that has challenging behavior issues finds him or herself in a shelter or rescue needing a home. While it’s imperative to make sure that the right home environment is selected for the dog, it’s also extremely important that the potential fosters or adopters have a plan. Providing them with appropriate guidance on how to set the dog up for success and meet his/her needs can be the difference between the dog staying in the home versus not. These sessions are set up just like typical client sessions - a history is taken, we map out the issues at hand and create a plan for each. At minimum, after one session you will have detailed information to provide to the potential foster or adopter on what to do, which can also be useful in deciding who is capable of or willing to commit to what the dog needs. Where doable, we can also work on follow up training sessions while the dog is at your facility or in a foster.

Seminars can also be done exclusively for shelter and rescue staff and volunteers. I’ve done this many groups and I always enjoy the smaller more intimate setting that can allow for more catered conversation to what each shelter and rescue needs. Whether it’s reading body language, safety, defensive handling, etc. dog professionals deserve to be supported in learning about behavior.
I also do general staff sessions where I come out a number of times and we just play it by ear for whatever challenges they have going on at that time, moving through Q&A, or actual training with the dogs themselves, opportunities are endless here.
